Cleaning After a Renovation in BC: What You Need to Know

Post-renovation cleaning is different from regular house cleaning. Construction dust, adhesive residue, and fine particulate require specific equipment and techniques. Here's the full guide.

Why Post-Renovation Cleaning Is Different

Construction dust is not regular household dust. Drywall compound, saw dust, grout haze, paint overspray, and concrete dust are all finer and more pervasive than typical home debris. These particles infiltrate HVAC vents, settle on every horizontal surface including the tops of door frames and inside cabinets, and — if disturbed by a dry broom — become airborne again and resettle. You cannot clean a post-renovation home with regular equipment and get it truly clean.

The Three Phases of Post-Renovation Cleaning

Phase 1: Rough clean — typically done by the contractor or a construction cleaning crew before finishing. Removal of large debris, construction materials, and rough sweep of all areas. This is not something a residential cleaner should be doing.

Phase 2: Fine dust clean — the phase most homeowners hire Maidless for. After all trades are finished and phase 1 is complete, fine dust clean covers: HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces (walls included), damp-wiping every horizontal and vertical surface, window and glass cleaning, appliance label removal, and floor cleaning appropriate to the floor type installed.

Phase 3: Touch-up clean — often booked 1–2 weeks after move-in, once residents have been living in the space and disturbed any residual dust. A standard clean with specific attention to any missed construction residue.

Specific Cleaning Tasks After Common BC Renovations

Kitchen renovation: Cabinet interior wipe-down, appliance label removal, countertop first clean with appropriate stone or quartz cleaner, under-cabinet area cleaning, hood fan installation area wipe-down.

Bathroom renovation: New tile grout haze removal (requires specific grout haze remover — not a standard cleaner), new fixture polish, caulking residue removal, vanity interior clean.

Flooring replacement: Adhesive residue from old flooring underlayment, saw dust from cuts, transition strip installation dust. Requires specific adhesive remover for the floor type.

Painting: Paint overspray from roller and brush, drip removal from non-painted surfaces, masking tape residue.

What Homeowners Often Miss

  • Inside HVAC vents and return air grilles — construction dust settles here and recirculates
  • Inside electrical outlet boxes — dust enters during drywall work
  • Tops of door frames and window frames
  • Inside new cabinets before loading them with dishes
  • Light fixture interiors where dust settles
