How to Choose a House Cleaning Service in Toronto
Toronto's cleaning service market spans the full quality spectrum — from professional insured companies with 500+ reviews to unlicensed Kijiji operators who disappear after one visit. The difference in quality and reliability between the best and worst options is enormous. This guide helps you evaluate options and avoid costly mistakes.
The Non-Negotiables
1. Background Checks on Every Cleaner
The cleaner entering your home will have unsupervised access to everything in it. Criminal background checks are non-negotiable. Ask any service directly: "Do you background-check every cleaner?" If they hedge, they don't. A real background check takes 2–5 business days and costs the company $30–$80 per person. Many Kijiji operators skip this entirely.
2. WSIB Registration and Liability Insurance
Ontario's WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) covers workers injured on the job. If an uninsured cleaner is injured in your home, you may be liable. Liability insurance protects you if the cleaner breaks or damages something. Both should be standard. Ask for proof if you're unsure.
3. Transparent Flat-Rate Pricing
Hourly pricing creates a perverse incentive — the cleaner is paid more for cleaning less efficiently. Flat-rate pricing aligns incentives: the company wants the clean done well and in a reasonable time. It also means no surprises on the final invoice. If you can't see the full price before you book, ask why.
4. Satisfaction Guarantee
Any reputable cleaning service offers a free re-clean if you're not satisfied. This is the industry standard. If a service doesn't offer this, they're not confident in their work.
Red Flags to Avoid in Toronto
- No online reviews or all reviews are very recent (suggests fake reviews or a new operator)
- Only accepts cash (no paper trail, no protection)
- Hourly pricing with no estimate or cap
- No WSIB registration number available on request
- No written satisfaction guarantee
- Quotes over the phone without visiting or seeing the home details
