How to Remove Carpet Stains

The most important rule for any carpet stain: blot, don't rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fibres. Always work from the outside edge of the stain toward the center.

Coffee and Tea Stains

  1. Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately
  2. Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap + 1 tablespoon white vinegar + 2 cups warm water
  3. Apply with a cloth, blotting from outer edge inward
  4. Rinse with cold water, blot dry
  5. If stain remains, apply hydrogen peroxide (test in hidden area first — can lighten some carpets)

Red Wine Stains

  1. Blot immediately — the sooner the better
  2. Pour a small amount of cold sparkling water on the stain to dilute
  3. Blot thoroughly
  4. Apply dish soap and cold water solution, blot again
  5. For dried wine stains: hydrogen peroxide + dish soap, let sit 20 minutes, blot and rinse

Pet Urine Stains

Regular cleaning products don't work on pet urine — they clean the surface but leave the uric acid crystals that cause the persistent smell. Use an enzyme-based pet stain cleaner:

  1. Blot up as much urine as possible
  2. Apply enzyme cleaner generously — it needs to reach as deep as the urine did
  3. Let sit for the time specified on the product (usually 10–15 minutes)
  4. Blot dry with clean cloths
  5. Sprinkle baking soda, let dry completely, vacuum

Grease and Oil Stains

  1. Absorb excess grease with baking soda or cornstarch — apply and let sit 15 minutes, then vacuum
  2. Apply a small amount of dish soap directly to the stain
  3. Work in with fingers or a soft brush
  4. Blot with warm water until soap is removed

Mud Stains

Counter-intuitively, let mud dry completely before cleaning. Trying to clean wet mud just spreads it. Once dry, vacuum up as much as possible, then treat with the dish soap and water solution.

What Makes Stains Worse

  • Rubbing instead of blotting
  • Using hot water (heat sets many stains permanently)
  • Over-wetting the carpet (can cause mould under the carpet pad)
  • Using bleach on coloured carpets
