How to Clean Hardwood Floors the Right Way

Hardwood floors are one of the most valuable features in a home, but they're also one of the most commonly damaged by improper cleaning. Here's how to keep them looking great without causing warping, dullness, or scratches.

What NOT to Use on Hardwood

  • Wet mops or steam mops — water is hardwood's biggest enemy. Excess moisture seeps into joints and causes warping and swelling.
  • Vinegar or acidic cleaners — these strip the finish over time and leave floors looking dull.
  • Bleach or ammonia-based cleaners — damage the finish and discolour the wood.
  • Oil soap products — leave residue that builds up and dulls the finish.

The Right Cleaning Method

Daily / As needed: Dry sweep or dust mop to remove grit and dust. Grit acts like sandpaper underfoot and scratches the finish faster than anything else.

Weekly: Vacuum with a hardwood-safe attachment (no beater bar). This picks up fine particles the dust mop misses.

Monthly: Damp mop with a microfibre mop barely wrung out — it should feel almost dry. Use a cleaner specifically formulated for hardwood floors (Bona is a trusted brand in Canada). Work with the grain.

Dealing With Common Hardwood Problems

Scuff marks: Rub with a clean tennis ball or a microfibre cloth. A small amount of hardwood floor cleaner on a cloth works for stubborn scuffs.

Water stains: Light stains can be buffed with fine steel wool (#0000) and re-finished. Dark stains usually require professional sanding.

Squeaky floors: Sprinkle talcum powder into the joint and sweep it in — it lubricates the boards and often eliminates the squeak.

BC Climate Considerations

Metro Vancouver's humidity fluctuates significantly between wet winters and drier summers. Hardwood expands and contracts with these changes. Keep indoor humidity between 35–55% with a humidifier in winter to prevent gaps from forming between boards.

Professional cleaners who regularly work with hardwood floors know which products are safe for different finishes. Maidless uses hardwood-safe cleaning methods on all cleans. Book at maidless.ca.
