How to Clean a Microwave Without Scrubbing
Dried food splatter in a microwave is hard to scrub off — but steam makes it effortless. Here's the method professional cleaners use.
The Steam Method (5 Minutes)
- Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 1–2 tablespoons of white vinegar (or a few lemon slices)
- Microwave on high for 5 minutes — let the steam fill the interior
- Leave the door closed for 2–3 minutes after — steam continues working
- Open and wipe the interior with a damp cloth — everything wipes off easily
The combination of steam and vinegar loosens dried food and eliminates odours simultaneously.
Cleaning the Turntable
Remove the turntable plate and the ring it sits on. Wash in warm soapy water or put in the dishwasher. Wipe the base where the ring spins — grime accumulates under the turntable ring.
Cleaning the Door
Clean the door seal (the rubber gasket) with a damp cloth — food gets trapped here and causes odours. Clean both sides of the door glass. Wipe the door latch mechanism.
Cleaning the Exterior
For stainless steel exteriors: wipe with the grain using a damp microfibre cloth and dry immediately. For white or black plastic: all-purpose spray and a cloth works fine.
For microwaves above the stove: the underside of the unit accumulates grease from cooking. Wipe with a degreaser and clean the filter (usually slides out from below) — rinse or replace according to the manual.
How Often to Clean Your Microwave
Weekly wipe-down to prevent buildup. Full steam clean monthly. The steam method takes 10 minutes total and prevents the buildup that requires actual scrubbing.
