How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances
Stainless steel looks great when clean and terrible when streaky. Here's how professional cleaners handle it.
The Most Important Rule: Always Wipe With the Grain
Stainless steel has a grain — tiny parallel lines running in one direction (usually horizontal on fridges and dishwashers, sometimes vertical on ovens). Wiping against the grain pushes residue into the lines and causes streaking. Always identify the grain first and wipe in that direction.
For Light Cleaning (Fingerprints, Smudges)
A damp microfibre cloth with a tiny drop of dish soap, wiped with the grain, followed immediately by a dry microfibre cloth. This works for 90% of daily cleaning needs.
For Grease and Stuck-On Residue
Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a microfibre cloth and wipe with the grain. Alcohol cuts through cooking grease without leaving residue. Follow with a clean dry cloth.
For a Deep Shine
Apply a pea-sized amount of mineral oil or baby oil to a cloth and buff with the grain. This fills microscopic scratches, repels fingerprints, and leaves the surface with a lasting shine. Use sparingly — too much oil attracts dust.
What NOT to Use on Stainless Steel
- Steel wool or abrasive pads — scratch the surface permanently
- Bleach or chlorine cleaners — cause pitting and corrosion
- Paper towels — leave lint and micro-scratches
- Circular wiping motions — always wipe with the grain, not in circles
Cleaning Stainless Steel Sinks
Sinks get more abuse than appliances. Scrub with baking soda and a soft cloth (with the grain), rinse thoroughly, dry completely (water spots are mineral deposits), then apply a small amount of mineral oil to shine and protect.
