How to Get Streak-Free Windows
Streaky windows are almost always caused by one of three things: the wrong product, the wrong cloth, or cleaning in direct sunlight. Here's how to fix all three.
Why Windows Streak
Direct sunlight: Cleaning solution dries before you can wipe it off, leaving streaks. Always clean windows in the shade or on overcast days.
Paper towels: They leave lint fibres on the glass. Switch to microfibre cloths or a squeegee.
Dirty tools: A dirty squeegee or cloth just moves grime around. Use a clean cloth for every window.
Too much product: More cleaner = more residue = more streaks. A light mist is enough.
The Professional Method (Squeegee)
Professional cleaners use a squeegee — it's faster and streak-free when done correctly:
- Wet the window with a soapy sponge or washer (dish soap + water works perfectly)
- Start the squeegee at the top corner and pull horizontally across
- Wipe the squeegee blade with a cloth after each stroke
- Overlap each stroke slightly
- Wipe the edges with a dry cloth
The Simple Microfibre Method
For interior windows without heavy soiling:
- Spray a small amount of glass cleaner on a microfibre cloth (not directly on the window)
- Wipe in an S-pattern, not circles
- Buff with a second dry microfibre cloth immediately
DIY Window Cleaner
Mix 2 cups water + ¼ cup white vinegar + ½ tsp dish soap. This works as well as commercial glass cleaner for most windows.
Window Frames and Sills
Window tracks collect more grime than almost any other surface in the house. Use a brush (an old toothbrush works) to loosen debris, then wipe with a damp cloth. Do this before cleaning the glass so drips don't dirty the frame.
