How to Prepare for a House Cleaning in Ontario

You've booked your first professional clean (or your first in a while) with Maidless. A bit of preparation before your cleaner arrives makes the difference between a good clean and an exceptional one. Here's everything you need to do — and not do — before they show up.

What to Do Before Your Cleaner Arrives

Tidy Clutter Off Surfaces

Cleaning and tidying are different services. Your cleaner's job is to clean every surface — but they can only do that when surfaces are clear. Mail, dishes, kids' toys, and clothing piled on surfaces prevent your cleaner from doing their best work. Spend 10–15 minutes before the appointment clearing countertops, coffee tables, and nightstands.

Secure Pets

Many cleaners are comfortable with pets in the home, but pets can cause stress, slow down the clean, and sometimes trigger allergies. If you have a dog that gets excited around strangers, confine them to one room (ideally one you're cleaning last) or arrange for them to be out during the clean.

Leave Access Instructions

If you won't be home, make sure access is clear: door code, lockbox code, where parking is available, and whether any rooms should be skipped. Leave a note with your preferences or use the booking notes field. This is especially important for condo buildings — concierge access, fob codes, or a spare key for the lockbox.

Point Out Anything Special

Natural stone surfaces (marble, granite, limestone): mention this so the cleaner uses pH-neutral products. Antique or fragile items: point out anything you'd prefer not to be moved. Rooms to skip: a home office with papers you don't want disturbed, a nursery where a sleeping baby shouldn't be disturbed.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't clean before the cleaner arrives — the deep-clean areas (inside oven, fridge, cabinets) specifically benefit from the professional doing them from scratch
  • Don't hover while the cleaner works — it slows them down and creates pressure; do a walkthrough after
  • Don't leave unclear instructions by text the morning of — use the booking notes field in advance

After Your Clean

Walk through immediately after to check quality while the cleaner is still there. If you notice anything missed, say so — a brief touch-up takes 5 minutes and prevents a re-clean booking. Maidless includes a 100% satisfaction guarantee — if something was missed, we'll come back within 48 hours at no charge.
