Cleaning After a Renovation
Post-renovation cleaning is one of the most demanding household cleaning tasks — and one of the most commonly underestimated. Construction dust (particularly drywall dust, which is extremely fine and pervasive) penetrates every surface, settles in HVAC systems, and distributes through a home in ways that regular cleaning products and techniques handle poorly. Ontario homeowners who try to DIY a post-renovation clean often spend an entire day and still find dust resurfacing for weeks.
The Problem with Drywall Dust
Drywall dust is alkaline, superfine, and sticky when wet. Running a wet mop over it creates a paste that smears rather than removes. The correct approach is dry removal first, then wet cleaning:
- HEPA vacuum everything: Walls, ceilings, window frames, baseboards, every surface — before mopping or wet cleaning. A standard vacuum recirculates fine dust; a HEPA vacuum captures it
- Replace HVAC filters: Construction dust loads filters immediately. Replace before running the system after renovation
- Dry dust all surfaces: Microfibre dry cloths capture dust; regular cloths push it around
- Then wet clean: Walls, floors, and surfaces — working top to bottom
What Post-Construction Cleaners Do Differently
Professional post-construction cleaners in Ontario carry commercial HEPA vacuums, appropriate PPE, and the correct products for construction-specific residues (paint overspray, caulking smears, adhesive residue). They work in the correct order and typically take 4–8 hours for a standard home where DIY would take 2–3 full days and still leave residue.
When to Call a Pro
Any renovation involving drywall, plaster, or significant sanding warrants professional post-construction cleaning. Kitchens, bathrooms, and whole-home renovations especially — the complexity and time investment makes professional cleaning the practical choice for most Ontario homeowners.
