Cleaning AC Vents & Air Returns in Ontario Homes
The vent covers, air supply registers, and return air grilles of an Ontario home's HVAC system are among the most dust-accumulating surfaces in any room — and among the least frequently cleaned. Dusty vents actively recirculate dust into the room every time the furnace or AC runs. They're also visible from floor level and ceiling level in a way that immediately signals the thoroughness of a cleaning.
Supply Vents (Air Coming Out)
The small rectangular or square registers on floors, walls, and ceilings that blow conditioned air should be cleaned every 2–3 months, or at minimum when they visibly accumulate dust. Remove the register (most simply lift or twist off), wash in warm soapy water, dry thoroughly, and replace. While the register is off, vacuum the duct opening with a crevice attachment to remove accumulated dust in the first 6–12 inches of ductwork.
Return Air Grilles (Air Going In)
Return grilles — larger covers, often in hallways or central areas — accumulate significantly more dust than supply registers because they're actively drawing air (and the dust in it) through the filter. These should be cleaned monthly during peak heating and cooling season. Wash with warm soapy water; ensure the filter behind the return grille is replaced on the appropriate schedule (typically 1–3 months for standard 1-inch filters in Ontario homes).
Duct Cleaning vs. Vent Cover Cleaning
Cleaning vent covers (the DIY task described above) is not the same as professional duct cleaning. Full professional duct cleaning — using commercial vacuum equipment and brushes to clean the ductwork throughout the home — is recommended every 3–5 years in most Ontario homes, more frequently with pets or after major renovation.
