Professional Cleaning for Allergy and Asthma Sufferers in Ontario
Ontario's seasonal allergy profile is severe — spring pollen, summer mould, fall ragweed, and year-round dust mites and pet dander make indoor air quality a genuine health concern for the province's estimated 3+ million allergy sufferers. Professional house cleaning is one of the most effective ways to reduce indoor allergen loads, but the technique and products matter as much as the frequency.
Top Indoor Allergens in Ontario Homes
- Dust mites — live in bedding, upholstery, and carpet. Regular vacuuming with HEPA filtration is essential
- Pet dander — embeds in fabric and settles on all surfaces; bi-weekly or weekly cleaning dramatically reduces levels
- Mould spores — basement moisture and bathroom grout are the primary sources in Ontario homes
- Pollen — tracked in seasonally; concentrated on floors and window sills near entry points
What to Request From Your Cleaner
- Fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products — many commercial cleaning products contain VOCs that trigger reactions
- HEPA vacuum — traps allergens rather than recirculating them
- Damp dusting — dry dusting disperses allergens into the air; damp microfibre traps them
- Focus on soft surfaces — upholstered furniture, rugs, and fabric chairs harbour more allergens than hard surfaces
Recommended Schedule for Allergy Sufferers
Bi-weekly minimum for most allergy households; weekly during peak pollen season (April–June and September in Ontario). The first visit should be a deep clean to establish a low-allergen baseline.
