Background Checks for House Cleaners in Ontario — Why It Matters
A house cleaner has unsupervised access to everything in your home — your valuables, your documents, your medications, your children's spaces. In Ontario, there is no licensing requirement for residential cleaning workers and no regulatory body that mandates background checks. The responsibility falls entirely on the cleaning company.
What a Criminal Record Check Covers
A standard Canadian criminal record check (criminal records query through the RCMP Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services) returns:
- Criminal convictions in Canada
- Outstanding charges
- Absolute and conditional discharges (for a limited time)
It does not automatically return: charges from outside Canada, charges where someone was acquitted, or civil disputes. A thorough screening process also includes identity verification (passport or provincial ID) and reference checks from prior employers.
What Budget Services Don't Tell You
Many low-cost cleaning services in Ontario claim to do "background checks" but in practice do one or more of the following:
- Ask workers to self-report criminal history (which anyone can lie about)
- Use free online "background check" tools that only return public social media data
- Use a single basic check and then hire workers without re-checking after a gap
- Sub-contract to individuals through platforms where they control their own background check submission
A real background check costs $30–$80 per person and takes 2–5 business days. It requires the worker's consent and a verified identity document. Any company that claims instant background checks is not doing proper criminal record checks.
How Maidless Does It
Every Maidless cleaner in Ontario goes through a criminal record check with identity verification before their first job. We accept fewer than 1% of cleaning applicants — screening for character, reliability, and professionalism beyond just the criminal record check. You can ask to see our screening process at any time.
