Cleaning Bathroom Vanities and Sinks
The bathroom vanity area — sink, faucet, counter, and mirror — is the most-used surface in most Ontario bathrooms and one of the fastest to show hard water deposits, toothpaste residue, and soap scum accumulation. Proper cleaning technique makes these surfaces look dramatically better and keeps them cleaner longer between visits.
Sink Cleaning
- Porcelain and ceramic sinks: A bathroom-specific cleaning product (Soft Scrub, Barkeeper's Friend, or similar mild abrasive) applied with a soft cloth or sponge removes soap scum and residue without scratching. Avoid steel wool and abrasive pads
- Undermount sinks: Pay particular attention to the seam where the sink meets the counter — soap scum and mould accumulate in this joint. A toothbrush-sized scrub brush gets into this area effectively
- Drain maintenance: Pour boiling water or a baking soda / white vinegar mixture down bathroom drains monthly to prevent hair and soap clog buildup
Faucet and Fixture Descaling
Ontario hard water leaves calcium deposits on faucet spouts and handles — the white or yellowish mineral crust that builds at the base of faucets and around aerators. To remove:
- Soak a cloth or paper towel in white vinegar and wrap around the affected fixture for 30–60 minutes
- The acid dissolves the calcium carbonate
- Wipe away the loosened deposits with a soft cloth
- For faucet aerators (the small screen at the tip of the faucet), unscrew, soak in vinegar overnight, rinse, and reinstall
