Cleaning vs Disinfecting
These terms are used interchangeably in advertising but mean different things — and using a disinfectant when you only need to clean, or cleaning when you needed to disinfect, both create problems.
Cleaning
Cleaning removes dirt, dust, grease, and organic material from a surface using mechanical action (scrubbing) and a detergent. It reduces microbial load by physically removing pathogens but does not kill them. For the vast majority of household cleaning tasks, cleaning is sufficient — the goal is to remove residue and prevent buildup, not to achieve sterility.
Disinfecting
Disinfecting kills pathogens on a surface using a chemical agent — bleach solution, hydrogen peroxide, or registered disinfectant products. For disinfection to work, the surface must be cleaned first (organic material like grease neutralizes disinfectants), and the disinfectant must remain wet on the surface for a specific dwell time (usually 30 seconds to 4 minutes depending on the product — the label specifies this).
When Disinfecting Is Actually Warranted
- After handling raw meat in the kitchen (cutting boards, sink)
- After someone in the household has been sick (bathroom fixtures, high-touch surfaces)
- In a daycare or childcare environment
When Cleaning Alone Is Fine
Regular weekly housecleaning — floors, counters, bathroom surfaces — does not require disinfectant products. Routine cleaning with soap and water achieves the level of hygiene adequate for healthy adults in residential settings. Overuse of disinfectants contributes to antimicrobial resistance and introduces unnecessary chemical exposure in the home.
