Ontario Fall Cleaning Checklist
Ontario's fall is the critical window to prepare your home for 5–6 months of closed-window heating season. The tasks below are specifically relevant to the Ontario climate — cold winters, forced-air heating, road salt, and the particular challenges of sealing and preparing a home for January through March.
Before the Heat Goes On (September–October)
- Replace HVAC filter: A fresh filter at the start of heating season is the single highest-impact indoor air quality action. Running a dirty filter all winter circulates dust, dander, and debris throughout the home
- Clean all window sills and tracks: Summer condensation and dust accumulate here. Clean before sealing windows for winter
- Vacuum and clean all window screens before storing: If your screens are removable, clean them before storing — dirty stored screens reintroduce debris next spring
- Deep clean the kitchen exhaust hood filter: Grease accumulates over the summer. A clean filter going into the heavier cooking season of fall and winter prevents fire risk
As Cold Weather Arrives (October–November)
- Entrance and mudroom prep: Set up the salt and sand mat, boot tray, and wet umbrella stand before the first snow. Cleaning salt-tracked floors is dramatically easier with proper entry containment
- Winterize the garage: Clear and clean the garage floor before salt, slush, and road grime start coming in on vehicles daily
- Clean bathroom exhaust fans: They'll be running constantly. Clean them now so they work at full capacity
- Wash all bedding and heavy blankets: Before they go into heavy rotation. Pull out and wash duvet, extra pillows, and flannel sheets
