Cleaning Your Garage in Ontario
Ontario's climate — particularly the road salt used extensively through our long winters — creates specific garage cleaning challenges. Salt and calcium chloride tracked in from driveways and roads accumulate on garage floors, corrodes metal components, and leaves white residue throughout the season. A proper annual garage clean-out in spring is a worthwhile investment in the home.
Garage Floor
Concrete garage floors accumulate oil stains, salt residue, and general grime. For sealed or epoxy-coated floors, a warm water and mild detergent solution with a stiff brush handles most routine cleaning. Oil stains on raw concrete respond to a commercial degreaser (available at most Ontario hardware stores); for severe staining, a pressure washer is the most effective tool. Allow the floor to dry completely before returning cars to the garage.
Walls and Overhead
Garage walls collect dust, cobwebs, and occasional splatter. An annual sweep of cobwebs from the walls and ceiling — especially around the garage door opener mechanism and light fixtures — is the minimum. Wall-mounted storage systems should be cleared and wiped annually.
Storage and Organization
While organization is outside a standard professional clean, a garage clean provides an opportunity to remove items that have accumulated over the winter and discard what's no longer needed before spring. A clear garage floor makes the actual cleaning far more effective.
