Hard Water Stains in Ontario Homes
Ontario's municipal water supplies — particularly in the GTA and much of southern Ontario — are moderately to significantly hard, meaning they carry elevated dissolved calcium and magnesium. Over time, this mineral content deposits on bathroom fixtures, glass shower doors, toilet bowls, and kitchen sinks as white or grey-white staining. These deposits are alkaline, which means acidic cleaners dissolve them — and most commercial bathroom cleaners are not acidic enough to work effectively.
What Actually Works
- White vinegar: The most effective household solution. Saturate a cloth in undiluted white vinegar, wrap it around taps or lay it against stained surfaces, and leave for 30–60 minutes. The acidity dissolves calcium deposits. For shower glass, spray generously and let dwell before wiping
- CLR (Calcium Lime Rust): Available at Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and most Ontario grocery stores. More concentrated than vinegar — effective on severe buildup. Follow dwell time instructions carefully
- Bar Keepers Friend: A mild oxalic acid-based powder. Excellent on sinks, tubs, and toilet bowls — mix with water to a paste, apply, let sit 5 minutes, scrub, rinse
What Doesn't Work
Standard all-purpose cleaners and most spray bathroom cleaners are pH-neutral or mildly alkaline — the same chemistry as the deposits you're trying to remove. They'll clean soap scum and surface grime but won't touch calcium buildup.
Prevention
Squeegee glass shower doors after each use. Wipe taps dry. A quick daily wipe removes mineral deposits before they harden — a 30-second habit that prevents the 30-minute cleaning job.
