Cleaning Your Home Office in Ontario
The shift to remote and hybrid work has made the home office a permanent fixture in hundreds of thousands of Ontario households. An area that was previously a spare bedroom or basement corner is now a professional workspace that gets used 8–10 hours a day, five days a week — and that level of use creates cleaning needs that residential cleaning needs to address specifically.
What Changes When You Work From Home
- Desk surfaces: A desk used daily accumulates food and coffee debris, skin oil on keyboard and mouse surfaces, and general clutter at a rate that casual home use doesn't. Weekly wiping of desk surfaces with an appropriate cleaner is reasonable for an active home office
- Screens and monitors: Monitor screens attract dust and fingerprints. Use a microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water or a screen-specific cleaner — never household cleaners, which can damage screen coatings
- Keyboard and mouse: These are among the most bacteria-laden surfaces in any home. Compressed air to remove debris under keys, followed by wiping with isopropyl alcohol (70%) is the standard approach
- Chair and seating area: Office chairs used for 8+ hours a day accumulate body oils and require periodic cleaning. Many fabric chairs can be wiped with a damp cloth; leather and synthetic leather can be cleaned with appropriate conditioners
- Flooring under the desk: Under-desk areas in home offices accumulate debris and cable dust faster than open floor areas. Make sure the professional cleaning includes this zone
Including the Home Office in Professional Cleaning
When booking professional cleaning, specify that you have a home office and want it included. Some clients prefer to exclude the home office entirely (privacy, equipment concerns); if so, communicate that clearly. If included, confirm the cleaner knows to avoid disturbing papers, cables, and equipment.
