Cleaning Light Fixtures & Ceiling Fans
Light fixtures and ceiling fans are among the most visible dust-accumulating surfaces in an Ontario home when dust is thick, and among the most commonly overlooked in routine cleaning. Addressing them quarterly — as part of a deep clean — makes a significant visible difference in room freshness.
Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fan blades accumulate a thick ridge of dust on their top surface that showers into the room when the fan starts — and is never addressed by regular floor and surface cleaning. The proper technique: hold a pillowcase over each blade and wipe toward the end, catching the dust inside the pillowcase rather than depositing it on the floor below. Follow with a damp cloth for any residue. The motor housing and blade bracket connections can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth.
Flush-Mount Light Fixtures
Glass globe and semi-flush fixtures collect dead insects and dust inside the glass. Remove the glass globe (usually unscrews from a central nut or clips off) and wash in warm soapy water in the sink. Allow to dry completely before replacing. The fixture base can be dusted and wiped while the globe is off.
Pendant Lights
Pendant lights (increasingly common in GTA condo kitchens and dining areas) can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth on the shade exterior. For glass or metal pendants, a window cleaning spray on a microfibre cloth gives a streak-free result. Never spray liquids near the bulb socket — clean with power off.
Recessed Lighting
Recessed pot lights accumulate a dust ring around the trim ring where the fixture meets the ceiling — a damp cloth run around the trim addresses this quickly. The light itself generally doesn't need cleaning unless it's visibly dusty inside.
