Cleaning Microwaves and Ovens in Ontario Homes
The inside oven and microwave are the two kitchen appliances most commonly neglected in standard cleaning visits — and the first things a home inspector, landlord, or prospective buyer notices in a deep clean or move-out. Here's the professional method for each.
Microwave Interior
The steam method is the fastest and most effective professional approach: fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and a few tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice. Heat on high for 3–5 minutes until steam builds up inside. The steam softens all dried splatter. Open the door, remove the turntable and ring, then wipe down all interior surfaces with a damp cloth — everything comes off easily. Turntable and ring washed separately in the sink.
For seriously neglected microwaves: add 30 additional seconds and let it sit with the door closed for another 2–3 minutes after the timer ends to let the steam work longer.
Oven Interior
The most time-intensive standard kitchen deep clean task. Professional approach: remove racks and soak them separately in the sink (hot water and a few tablespoons of dish soap, let soak for 20–30 minutes). For the oven interior, a commercial oven cleaner (Easy-Off or equivalent) is the most effective product for heavy grease and carbon buildup — apply, leave to dwell for 15–30 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. For moderate buildup, a paste of baking soda and water works well with a 30-minute dwell and an abrasive non-scratch pad. The oven door glass (interior) requires the same approach — baking soda paste scrubbed with a non-scratch pad.
How Often
Microwave interior: standard clean scope (every visit in a standard or deep clean). Oven interior: deep clean only — not included in standard recurring visits. Add it as a deep clean add-on quarterly or semi-annually in a household with regular oven use.
