Cleaning a New Build Home in Ontario
Moving into a brand-new Ontario home is exciting — but new builds have specific cleaning challenges that established homes don't. Understanding what to expect and how to set up cleaning properly from the start saves time and prevents surface damage on your new finishes.
What's Different About a New Build
- Construction residue: Despite a builder's pre-closing clean, new builds often have construction dust, caulk smears, grout haze, paint overspray on hardware, and adhesive residue on surfaces. The builder's clean is surface-level; a professional post-build clean goes deeper
- Off-gassing surfaces: New paint, carpet, cabinets, and flooring off-gas VOCs for weeks to months after installation. Keep windows open when possible and use fragrance-free cleaning products that don't add additional VOCs
- Builder-grade surfaces that need care: Some builder finishes — chrome fixtures, budget-grade cabinet interiors, laminate flooring — are more sensitive to abrasive or chemical cleaning than the premium finishes they mimic
- No accumulated grime: The first professional clean on a new build is faster and easier than on an established home — but precision matters more because the surfaces are fresh and any scratch or mark is visible against pristine material
When to Start Recurring Service
Ideally, start recurring professional service on day one of occupancy — set the standard from the beginning rather than letting the home get dirty and then booking a catch-up clean. Bi-weekly is the most common plan for new Ontario families.
