Preparing for Spring Allergy Season in Ontario
Ontario spring allergy season typically begins in late March (tree pollen — birch, maple, oak) and continues through May and into June (grass pollen). For Ontario households with allergy sufferers, the weeks before and during peak pollen season are the most important time to manage indoor air quality.
Before Pollen Season Starts (Late February–March)
- Change HVAC filters: Replace furnace filters with MERV 11–13 rated filters — these capture pollen particles that lower-rated filters pass through. Install before pollen season so the system starts filtering immediately when windows go up
- Clean or replace range hood filters: Grease-clogged filters restrict airflow that vents cooking odours and moisture
- Vacuum all upholstery, mattresses, and rugs: These surfaces hold pollen that enters the home in the fall and winter — clearing them before the new season starts gives a baseline
- Service HVAC: Clean the coils, check the ductwork — a forced-air system blowing through dirty ducts distributes allergens through the entire home
During Pollen Season
- Keep windows closed during peak pollen hours (early morning, when counts are highest)
- Run air purifier with HEPA filter in bedrooms during sleep
- Shower and change clothes after outdoor exposure before entering the bedroom
- Increase vacuuming frequency — pollen enters on shoes, clothing, and through window screens
Professional Cleaning Timing
Schedule a professional deep clean in early March (before season) to clear the accumulated dust and allergens from winter, and again in late June (after the primary Ontario pollen season) to clear accumulated pollen from surfaces. These two cleans bookend the allergy season effectively.
