Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances
Stainless steel appliances are among the most popular choices in Ontario kitchens — and among the most frustrating to keep clean. Fingerprints, smudges, and streaks show immediately, and using the wrong products can dull the finish or leave permanent scratches. The method is simple once you understand the material.
The Grain Rule
Stainless steel has a grain — visible as fine parallel lines in the brushed finish. Always wipe in the direction of the grain, never across it. Wiping across the grain scratches the surface and creates the visible streaking that seems impossible to remove. On most fridges and dishwashers, the grain runs horizontally. On most ranges, it runs vertically. Look closely before wiping.
What to Use
- Microfibre cloth + warm water: Sufficient for daily fingerprint removal. Dampen, wipe with the grain, dry immediately with a second dry cloth
- Dish soap + warm water: For grease and food residue. Apply, wipe with grain, rinse with clean damp cloth, dry immediately — never leave water to air-dry (it leaves mineral spots)
- Dedicated stainless steel cleaner (Weiman, Bar Keepers Friend Spray): For stubborn grease or to restore shine. Apply a small amount to a cloth (not directly to the appliance), wipe with grain, buff dry
- Mineral oil or baby oil: A small amount buffed with the grain after cleaning restores shine and repels fingerprints for days
What Never to Use
- Steel wool or abrasive scrubbers — permanently scratch the finish
- Bleach — damages stainless steel over time
- Oven cleaner on exterior surfaces
- Wiping across the grain
