Cleaning a Two-Storey Home Efficiently
Two-storey homes — the most common format for detached and semi-detached homes in the GTA and Ontario suburbs — present a specific cleaning sequencing challenge: how to clean two floors without tracking dirt from the lower floor upstairs, and without re-cleaning the stairs after cleaning the upper level.
The Correct Order
Top-down for all dry tasks (dusting, wiping surfaces): Start at the top of the house and work down. Dust from ceiling fans and high shelves falls — clean it upstairs first, and it won't contaminate the downstairs you've already cleaned.
Bottom-up for wet cleaning and floors: After all surface cleaning is done, do floors from the bottom floor up. Vacuum the main floor, then vacuum upstairs. Mop hard floors starting at the far end of the house and working toward the exit.
Stairs last among floors, top to bottom: Vacuum the stairs from the top step to the bottom as the final floor task. Stairs accumulate what falls from upper-floor activity — clean them after the upper floor is done.
Bathrooms and Kitchen
These are cleaned in whatever order they appear in your top-down sweep. Apply cleaner and let it dwell, clean other rooms, then come back to scrub — this is more efficient than cleaning each bathroom start-to-finish before moving on.
Time Estimates for Two-Storey Ontario Homes
- 3 bed / 2 bath: 2.5–3.5 hours for a thorough clean
- 4 bed / 2.5 bath: 3–4.5 hours
- Professional clean: typically 2–3 hours with two cleaners
