Eco-Friendly & Green Cleaning in Ontario — A Practical Guide 2026
The "green cleaning" market in Ontario is full of claims that range from genuinely meaningful to pure marketing. Here's a practical guide to what eco-friendly cleaning actually means, what to look for, and what to ask any cleaning service that claims to offer it.
What "Eco-Friendly" Actually Means
A cleaning product can legitimately claim to be eco-friendly if it meets one or more of these criteria: biodegradable surfactants (cleaning agents that break down in water without persisting in the environment), no phosphates (which cause eutrophication in waterways), no synthetic fragrances (which are VOCs — volatile organic compounds — that affect indoor air quality), low-toxicity formulations that are safer for children and pets, and concentrated formats that reduce packaging waste.
What "eco-friendly" does NOT mean: that the product is effective. Some genuinely eco-certified products are effective across all surface types; others are effective only on light soiling. A cleaning service that uses only eco-certified products but doesn't clean thoroughly is a worse choice than one that uses conventional products professionally.
Certifications That Matter
- EcoLogo / UL ECOLOGO (CCD-110): Canada's primary environmental certification for cleaning products, administered by UL (formerly TerraChoice). Requires lifecycle environmental assessment. Meaningful certification.
- EPA Safer Choice (US): US EPA's certification for products using safer chemical ingredients. Many products available in Canada carry this. Meaningful for ingredient safety.
- Green Seal (GS-37): US non-profit certification, widely used in institutional cleaning. Rigorous, meaningful.
- "All Natural" / "Plant-Based": Marketing terms, not certifications. Meaningless without an underlying certification. Many naturally-derived ingredients are also toxic or corrosive in high concentrations.
What Maidless Uses
Maidless uses EcoLogo-certified products across standard and deep cleaning services in Ontario. For post-construction cleaning where conventional degreasers are required to remove construction adhesives, we use the minimum effective conventional product and switch back to certified products for all other surfaces. On natural stone (marble, granite, quartzite, travertine), we exclusively use pH-neutral certified products regardless of surface condition — stone is permanently damaged by acidic or alkaline cleaners, and the damage is irreversible.
