Do I legally have to clean when I move out in Ontario?
Yes. Under Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act, tenants must leave a unit in a "reasonably clean condition." This is a legal obligation, not optional. What "reasonably clean" means in practice: same standard as when you moved in, accounting for normal wear and tear.
Can my landlord charge me for cleaning in Ontario?
A landlord can file a claim at the LTB (Landlord and Tenant Board) for cleaning costs above normal wear and tear. But they cannot simply withhold your last-month's-rent deposit — that must be applied to your final month's rent. They can only recover cleaning costs through an LTB order after a hearing.
