Rainy Season Cleaning Tips for BC Homes
BC's rainy season runs roughly October through April — that's nearly half the year of wet boots, wet dogs, wet umbrellas, and mud tracked through entranceways. Here's how to manage it without spending every weekend cleaning.
The Entryway System
The single most effective thing you can do is create a mud room or wet zone at your entry. Even without a dedicated mudroom, these basics make a significant difference:
- A large, absorbent entry mat (at least 60cm deep — enough for two steps)
- A boot tray or waterproof mat for wet shoes
- Hooks at the door for wet coats and umbrellas with a drip tray below
- A bench or stool for sitting while removing boots
If wet shoes never make it past the entry, your floors stay clean regardless of what's happening outside.
Flooring During Rainy Season
Hardwood floors: Water is hardwood's biggest enemy. Wipe up water drips immediately. Place rugs in high-traffic areas during rainy months. If hardwood floors in your entryway are warping, address the moisture source — not just the surface.
Carpets: Wet boots on carpet = mud + moisture embedded in fibres. Add a hard surface at the entry point or vacuum more frequently during rainy months.
Managing Indoor Humidity
BC homes in rainy season often have indoor relative humidity of 60–75% — ideal conditions for dust mites and mould. Target 35–55% with a dehumidifier in damp areas. Run bathroom fans consistently. Ensure dryer venting is working properly and not adding humidity.
Mould Prevention in Rainy Season
Check these areas monthly during rainy season:
- Window corners and sills (condensation collects here)
- Bathroom ceiling (especially if fan is underused)
- Behind and under bathroom vanity
- Closets on exterior walls
- Basement corners
