Why Decluttering Before Your Cleaner Matters
Every Toronto home is different, but one pattern holds across every professional clean: the more cleared the surfaces, the deeper the cleaner can go. Professional cleaning time is fixed — you've booked 3 hours, or 4, or whatever the scope requires — and every minute the cleaner spends moving items off counters, relocating piles from floors, or working around clutter is a minute not spent on the actual cleaning: scrubbing the grout, getting behind the toilet, wiping the inside of the microwave. A 15-minute pre-clean tidy from the homeowner can translate to 30–45 extra minutes of productive cleaning time — a meaningful upgrade to the quality of the clean without any change in price. This guide covers exactly what to do and what to leave.
What to Do Before Your Cleaner Arrives
Kitchen
- Clear the countertops — move appliances (toaster, coffee maker, blender) to one side or into a cabinet if you want the counter under them cleaned; leave them in place if you want cleaning around them
- Empty the sink of dishes — clean dishes can go in the drying rack; unwashed dishes in the dishwasher. A sink full of dishes prevents cleaning of the sink basin
- Put away any items on the stovetop — pots, utensils, trivets — so the stovetop surface can be fully cleaned
Bathrooms
- Clear the countertop around the sink — toothbrushes in a cup is fine; bottles, face wash, and containers moved to the side allow full counter cleaning
- Remove personal items from the shower floor — shampoo bottles standing on the floor prevent cleaning of the shower floor area beneath them; move them to a shelf or hang them
- Clear the toilet tank top if you store items there
Bedrooms
- Pick clothing up from the floor — a pile of clothing is not cleaned around effectively; 2 minutes per bedroom to deposit floor items in a hamper or on a chair is enough
- Clear the nightstands and dresser tops if you want them cleaned — if items are staying, cleaners will clean around them
Living Areas
- Tidy flat surfaces — coffee table, end tables, console — enough to expose the surface for cleaning; we don't need museum-level staging, just cleared enough to wipe
- Pick up items from the floor — toys, shoes, magazines — so the cleaner can vacuum without interruption
What to Leave for the Cleaner
- Fixed appliances — don't move the microwave, the stand mixer, the blender unless you want the space beneath cleaned (our cleaners will wipe the exteriors in place)
- Furniture — we clean around and under furniture that's easily moveable (chairs, side tables, ottomans); heavy furniture (sofas, beds, dressers) is cleaned around in place
- Dishes drying — a drying rack with dishes is fine; we work around it
- Decorative items — bookshelves, display shelves — we dust around items in place; if you want individual items moved and cleaned under, let us know in your booking notes
The Most Valuable 15 Minutes
The single highest-return pre-clean action: clear the kitchen counters and the bathroom sink counters. These two surfaces, fully cleared, allow the cleaners to wipe the full counter surface rather than the perimeter around items — a quality upgrade that's immediately visible and takes less than 10 minutes to accomplish. Everything else is secondary.
