Cleaning Your Bathroom Vanity & Counter
The bathroom vanity counter — the surface around the sink where toothbrushes, soap dispensers, lotions, and daily-use items accumulate — is one of the highest-frequency cleaning surfaces in any Ontario home. A thorough vanity clean addresses the counter surface itself, the sink basin, the faucet and handles, the drain surround, and the mirror above.
Hard Water: Ontario's Biggest Bathroom Challenge
Many Ontario cities — including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Mississauga, and most of southern Ontario — have moderately hard to hard water. Calcium and magnesium deposits from hard water accumulate on faucets, the sink basin surround, and around the drain faster than in soft-water regions. For routine calcium scale removal, a cloth or sponge soaked in diluted white vinegar left on the affected area for 5–10 minutes dissolves mineral deposits without damage to most faucet finishes (avoid on plated brass or antique fixtures).
Vanity Counter Materials
- Cultured marble / solid surface: pH-neutral bathroom cleaner, no abrasives or bleach
- Granite / natural stone: Stone-safe pH-neutral cleaner only — no vinegar, no citrus, no bleach
- Laminate: Warm soapy water, avoid standing water at seams, no abrasives
- Quartz: Standard bathroom cleaner, avoid vinegar on the grout lines between quartz and sink
Faucet and Handle Deep Clean
Faucet handles are the most touched surfaces in a bathroom — higher bacteria concentration than the toilet seat by most studies. A disinfecting wipe or spray every 2–3 days on handles and the faucet body keeps bacteria in check. For scale buildup around the base of the faucet and the aerator (the mesh insert in the faucet tip), soaking in diluted vinegar removes mineral deposits that reduce water flow.
