Cleaning a Cat Household
Cats are among the most popular pets in Ontario homes — and they create a distinctive set of cleaning challenges. Cat dander is one of the most potent allergens in domestic environments, cat hair weaves itself into upholstery and carpet with remarkable persistence, and the litter area requires consistent management to prevent odour from becoming a whole-home problem.
Cat Hair Management
Cat hair accumulates fastest on upholstered furniture, carpet, and any fabric surface — and it's electrostatically attracted to synthetic fabrics particularly. Vacuum upholstered furniture with an upholstery attachment weekly, and use a rubber glove or a specialized pet hair removal mitt on fabric surfaces (the rubber creates static that lifts embedded hair better than a lint roller). On hard floors, a slightly damp microfibre mop collects cat hair more effectively than a dry broom, which tends to redistribute it.
Dander Control
Cat dander — microscopic skin flakes — is what causes cat allergies, and it's distinct from visible hair. HEPA air purifiers in the rooms where cats spend the most time (typically bedroom and living room) significantly reduce airborne dander concentration. Wash any fabric item the cat regularly rests on — throws, pet beds, cushion covers — on a hot cycle weekly.
Litter Area
Scoop daily. Replace litter completely every 2–3 weeks — partial refill and daily scooping does not prevent the ammonia odour that develops from accumulated urine in the remaining litter. Place a mat under and around the litter box to capture tracked particles, and vacuum this mat daily. Locate the litter box in a ventilated area if possible.
