Cleaning Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures
Ceiling fans and light fixtures accumulate dust at a rate that surprises many Ontario homeowners — a ceiling fan blade can collect a thick layer of dust within weeks, and this dust is redistributed around the room when the fan is turned on. Cleaning fans and fixtures requires a different approach than flat surfaces.
Ceiling Fan Blades
The most common mistake when cleaning ceiling fans: wiping the top of blades with a standard cloth, which pushes the dust off the edge and onto furniture and floors below. Instead: use a pillowcase pulled over each blade, then slide it back toward you — the pillowcase traps the dust inside rather than releasing it. For heavy buildup, a lightly damp cloth followed by a dry one is more effective than a dry cloth alone. Clean ceiling fans every 3–6 weeks depending on air circulation.
Pendant and Chandelier Fixtures
For glass pendant fixtures: remove glass shades (most lift or unscrew), wash in warm soapy water, dry completely before replacing. For metal fixtures: wipe with a slightly damp microfibre cloth — avoid dripping water into the fixture housing. For crystal chandeliers: a mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol (1:1) in a spray bottle is the professional cleaning method — spray the crystals directly, let gravity carry the dissolved dust down, catch it with a towel or drop sheet laid below.
Recessed Lighting
Recessed pot lights accumulate dust in the ring trim around the bulb. Wipe the trim ring with a damp cloth regularly. Do not spray liquids into the housing. Replace dirty diffuser covers on LED recessed fixtures by hand-washing them (they typically unclip).
