Cleaning After Pet Shedding Season
Ontario's seasonal temperature swings trigger heavy shedding cycles in most double-coated dogs and many cats — typically in spring (shedding the winter coat) and fall (shedding the summer coat). During peak shedding, the volume of hair that accumulates in carpet, on upholstery, in HVAC vents, and throughout the home can feel overwhelming. A systematic approach makes it manageable.
Tools That Actually Work
- Rubber gloves or a damp rubber squeegee on upholstery: Rubber creates static that pulls embedded pet hair out of fabric far better than a vacuum brush attachment. Drag it across the fabric surface and watch the hair ball up for easy removal
- A vacuum with a HEPA filter and pet attachment: Regular vacuums recirculate fine dander and hair particles. A HEPA filter captures them
- Rubber broom on hardwood and tile: More effective than a regular broom for sweeping pet hair — static cling does the work
- Lint rollers: For clothing, lampshades, and fabric surfaces where vacuuming is impractical
High-Accumulation Surfaces
HVAC vents and returns: Pet hair collects in return vents and accelerates filter loading. During shedding season, check and replace HVAC filters monthly rather than quarterly.
Under furniture: Dust bunnies under sofas and beds become massive fur accumulations. Vacuum these weekly during peak shedding.
Baseboards: Hair settles against baseboards and builds up. A damp cloth wipe along baseboards weekly prevents buildup.
Carpet edges and stairs: Hair collects at carpet-wall junctions — a vacuum edging attachment reaches these spots.
