Speed Cleaning Before Guests Arrive
The goal of speed cleaning before guests is different from regular cleaning: you're optimizing for visual impact and smell, not thoroughness. Guests notice what they see immediately upon entering and the spaces they use — not the inside of your oven. Here's the order of operations that produces the best result in the least time.
60-Minute Version
Minutes 0–5: Ventilate and declutter the main path. Open windows if weather permits. Do one pass of the entrance, main living areas, and kitchen to collect anything that doesn't belong and put it out of sight. A laundry basket makes this fast — fill it and put it in a bedroom.
Minutes 5–20: Bathrooms first. Guest bathrooms get close inspection. Wipe the sink, toilet (seat, rim, and bowl), and mirror. Hang a fresh towel. Empty the trash. This takes 5–7 minutes per bathroom.
Minutes 20–35: Kitchen surfaces. Wipe counters, stovetop, and sink. Load anything in the sink into the dishwasher. Wipe the kitchen faucet — it catches grease and always looks dirty.
Minutes 35–50: Living areas and entrance. Quick vacuum of visible carpet and entry mat. Wipe visible surfaces — coffee table, dining table, kitchen counters again if needed. Straighten cushions and throws.
Minutes 50–60: Entry and details. Clean entrance mirror, sweep or wipe the entrance floor, make sure there's somewhere for coats and shoes. The entrance is the first and last impression.
30-Minute Version
Cut everything in half: bathrooms only, kitchen surfaces only, entrance only. Visible living areas are secondary — guests rarely examine them as closely as bathrooms and kitchens.
