Baby-Safe Cleaning with a Newborn at Home
New parents in Ontario often over-disinfect and over-clean after bringing a newborn home — using strong chemical products where gentler approaches are safer and equally effective. Newborns are vulnerable to chemical exposures (residues on surfaces they'll touch, VOCs they'll inhale) but don't require a sterile environment — a clean, low-chemical environment is the goal.
Products to Avoid Around Newborns
- Aerosol sprays: Propellants and fragrance compounds become airborne and can be inhaled. Use pump sprays or cloth application instead
- Bleach in spray form: Chlorine fumes are respiratory irritants. If bleach is needed (surface sanitization after illness), use it in a well-ventilated space when the baby is not present, and rinse thoroughly
- Synthetic fragrance products: Air fresheners, scented cleaners, and fabric softeners contain fragrance compounds that are common irritants. Switch to fragrance-free alternatives
- Ammonia-based cleaners: Glass cleaners containing ammonia should be avoided or used only in well-ventilated areas away from baby
What Actually Needs Sanitizing
For healthy full-term newborns with healthy caregivers, the surfaces that genuinely benefit from sanitizing (not just cleaning) are limited: feeding equipment (bottles, pump parts) — these should be sanitized per your pediatrician's recommendation. High-touch surfaces (doorknobs, light switches) during illness in the household. Diaper-changing surfaces after each use — clean with soap and water or an unscented baby wipe.
Safer Alternatives
For general household cleaning with a newborn: unscented dish soap and water handle most surfaces safely. White vinegar (diluted) for glass and surfaces. Baking soda for scrubbing. Unscented plant-based all-purpose cleaners (available at most Ontario grocery stores) are a good ready-made option.
