Decluttering Before a Professional Clean
One of the most common questions Ontario homeowners have before their first professional cleaning is: "Do I need to clean before the cleaner comes?" The short answer: you don't need to clean, but decluttering is genuinely helpful — and here's why it matters.
Why Decluttering Matters
Professional cleaners clean; they don't organize or declutter. A cleaner who arrives to a kitchen counter covered in mail, appliances, and miscellaneous items has two options: work around them (meaning the counter surface doesn't actually get cleaned) or spend time moving them (which reduces time available for actual cleaning tasks). A cleared counter takes 90 seconds to clean properly; a covered one takes 8–10 minutes and still isn't fully cleaned.
What to Clear Before Your Cleaner Arrives
- Kitchen counters: Move appliances you don't use daily, mail, kids' art, dishes, and miscellaneous items off the counter before the visit
- Bathroom counters: Move toiletries off the vanity counter so it can be properly wiped. Leave them on the toilet tank or in a bag temporarily
- Floors: Pick up clothes, shoes, bags, and toys from floors in every room — the cleaner needs access to vacuum and mop
- Tables and desks: Clear flat surfaces so they can be dusted and wiped
What to Leave
You don't need to pre-wash dishes (unless the sink is so full it prevents cleaning the sink itself), pre-wipe surfaces, or vacuum before the cleaner arrives. That's their job — and doing it before they come reduces the value of the service.
