Cleaning Ontario Entryways During Mud Season
Ontario's spring mud season — typically March through May, as snowmelt, rain, and softened ground combine to create the year's worst tracking conditions — is the most demanding period for entryways and mudrooms. The combination of wet, muddy footwear, wet dog paws, and salt and grit residue from winter that continues to track in creates an entryway cleaning challenge that requires daily attention to prevent floor damage.
The Defense System
- Exterior mat: A stiff-bristle outdoor mat (not a flat rubber mat) at the door — the bristle mat scrapes mud from soles before they enter. Rubber mats trap dirt but don't clean shoes the way a stiff-bristle mat does
- Interior mat: An absorbent mat inside the door captures residual moisture from shoes and wet boots. A machine-washable mat that goes in the laundry weekly is the most practical option
- Boot storage: A boot tray or rack that keeps wet footwear contained — wet boots left directly on hardwood or laminate floors during mud season are the primary cause of spring water damage to entryway floors
Daily Cleaning During Mud Season
During active mud season in Ontario, the entryway typically needs: a daily floor sweep or vacuum to remove dried mud (dried mud sweeps easily; wet mud smears), a wet mop 2–3 times per week, and mat washing weekly. This sounds like significant effort but takes 5–10 minutes daily — the alternative is permanent staining and water damage to entryway floors.
