Cleaning Granite & Marble Countertops
Natural stone countertops — granite, marble, quartzite, and similar materials — are among the most premium and most maintenance-sensitive surfaces in Ontario kitchens and bathrooms. They require a different approach than quartz or laminate, and incorrect cleaning products cause permanent damage.
Daily Cleaning
Wipe stone countertops daily with a soft cloth or microfibre and warm water, or with a pH-neutral stone cleaner (Granite Gold, StoneTech, or similar). Never use acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon juice, citrus-based cleaners) on marble or limestone — they etch the surface chemically, creating dull, rough patches that cannot be buffed out without professional refinishing. Granite is more resistant to acid than marble, but the same precaution applies.
What to Avoid
- Bleach: damages the stone surface and the sealant
- Abrasive cleaners: scratch the polished finish permanently
- Ammonia-based cleaners: degrade the stone's sealant over time
- Generic bathroom sprays: most are too acidic for natural stone
Sealing
Natural stone countertops need to be sealed to resist staining — the sealant fills the porous surface and prevents liquids from penetrating and staining the stone. Test your seal annually by placing a few drops of water on the surface — if the water beads, the seal is intact. If it absorbs, the stone needs resealing. Most Ontario homes with natural stone countertops should reseal annually; sealing takes 30 minutes and is a straightforward DIY task with an appropriate stone sealer.
