Cleaning Home Gym Equipment
Home gyms have become a fixture in Ontario homes — particularly in the GTA where gym memberships were interrupted and basement gym setups became the standard workaround. Home gym equipment accumulates sweat, body oils, and bacteria on equipment surfaces and rubber flooring in ways that require specific cleaning attention.
Rubber Flooring
Rubber gym flooring — the interlocking tiles or roll rubber common in home gyms — absorbs odour over time as sweat penetrates the rubber. Cleaning rubber flooring requires:
- Regular vacuuming of the seams and surface debris
- Damp mopping with a pH-neutral cleaner or dilute dish soap — avoid anything citrus or acid-based, which can degrade rubber
- Monthly application of a rubber floor conditioner if the flooring is getting dry or brittle (Ontario's low-humidity winters accelerate rubber degradation)
Equipment Surfaces
- Free weights and barbells: Wipe down with a damp cloth after use. For iron weights, dry thoroughly — rust is the main concern. Spray handles with isopropyl alcohol (70%) for disinfection
- Cardio equipment (treadmill, bike, rower): Wipe sweat contact areas (handles, console, seat) with a damp microfibre cloth after each use. Cleaning solution should be mild — aggressive cleaners can damage electronic components and display screens
- Vinyl-padded benches and seats: Wipe with a damp cloth with mild cleaner, then dry — vinyl can crack if left wet
