Deep Cleaning Your Home Office
Ontario's significant remote and hybrid work population — particularly concentrated in the GTA's professional corridors — has made the home office a genuine primary work environment for hundreds of thousands of residents. Deep cleaning a home office requires attention to electronics and equipment that a standard cleaning visit doesn't address.
Computer Equipment
- Keyboard: Turn upside down and shake over a garbage bin, then use compressed air (available at Best Buy, Staples, or Walmart Ontario) to dislodge debris between keys. Wipe keycap surfaces with a barely-damp microfibre cloth. For a thorough clean, remove keycaps (for mechanical keyboards) and wash in warm soapy water
- Monitor: Use a dry microfibre cloth specifically designed for screens — paper towels and regular cloths scratch monitor coatings. Never spray liquid directly on a monitor
- Mouse: Wipe exterior with a slightly damp cloth. For optical mice, clean the sensor aperture with compressed air
- PC tower / laptop: Compressed air into ventilation slots removes internal dust that causes overheating. Wipe exterior surfaces with a barely-damp cloth
Desk Surfaces
Desk surfaces accumulate crumbs, coffee rings, hand oils, and general workplace grime. For a proper desk deep clean, clear everything off the surface — including the monitor stand, desk accessories, and plant — and wipe the full surface with an appropriate cleaner for the material (wood-safe for wood desks, all-purpose for laminate).
Cable Management
Cables accumulate dust as static electricity attracts particulate. A quick pass with a slightly damp cloth along each cable bundle, combined with compressed air at cable connections, addresses the worst buildup. This is also a good opportunity to remove unused cables that add clutter.
