Cleaning Kitchen Cabinet Fronts
Kitchen cabinet fronts are among the highest-grease-accumulation surfaces in an Ontario home. The combination of cooking vapour, steam, and airborne oils that rises from the cooktop and accumulates over cabinets — particularly the cabinets above and around the range — creates a sticky film that attracts dust and becomes progressively harder to remove if left uncleaned for extended periods. This is one of the surfaces where professional deep cleaning makes the most visible difference compared to routine maintenance.
By Cabinet Material
- Painted MDF (most common in modern Ontario kitchens): Warm water with a small amount of dish soap on a slightly damp microfibre cloth — wipe, then dry immediately. Do not soak, do not use abrasive scrubbers. For heavy grease: diluted dish soap left 2–3 minutes before wiping. A dedicated kitchen degreaser (diluted as directed) is the most effective product for heavy buildup on painted MDF
- Real wood (stained or clear finish): Diluted wood-safe cleaner (Murphy Oil Soap diluted 1:20 works well) — always wipe with the grain, dry immediately. Never leave moisture on wood cabinet surfaces
- Thermofoil/laminate: Similar to painted MDF — mild degreaser, damp cloth, dry immediately; avoid abrasive pads which scratch laminate
Hardware
Cabinet handles and pulls are high-touch surfaces that accumulate grease and grime faster than the cabinet faces. A brief wipe with a damp cloth during every regular cleaning and a deeper clean with a soft toothbrush and diluted degreaser in the crevices around the hardware base keeps them in excellent condition.
