Laundry Room Cleaning in Ontario Homes
The laundry room is one of the most overlooked areas in routine professional cleaning, yet it accumulates lint, detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, and moisture in ways that make periodic deep attention worthwhile. Here's the professional approach to laundry room maintenance.
Washing Machine
- Drum cleaning: Run an empty hot-water cycle with a commercial washing machine cleaner (Affresh or equivalent) or a cup of white vinegar monthly. This prevents detergent and mineral buildup inside the drum
- Door gasket (front-load washers): The rubber gasket around the door traps moisture, lint, and sometimes small items (socks, coins, hair bands) — wipe it thoroughly with a damp cloth after every few loads, and inspect it monthly for mould. Mould in the door gasket is the most common washer maintenance problem in Ontario front-loaders
- Detergent drawer: Remove and rinse monthly — detergent and fabric softener buildup creates residue that can affect wash quality
Dryer
- Lint trap: Clean after every single load, without exception. A loaded lint trap reduces dryer efficiency and is a fire hazard
- Exhaust duct: The dryer exhaust duct from the dryer to the exterior vent accumulates lint over time — it should be professionally cleaned every 1–2 years. A restricted exhaust is both a fire risk and causes the dryer to run hot and damage clothes
- Dryer drum: Wipe down occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dryer sheet residue
Laundry Room Floor and Surfaces
Laundry room floors — typically tile or vinyl — accumulate lint, detergent powder, and occasional water spills. Sweep first (dry, before wet mopping — wet lint is much harder to clean than dry lint), then damp mop with an appropriate floor cleaner.
