Garage Deep Clean & Organization
The garage is consistently the most neglected space in Ontario homes — and the one most likely to become a storage overflow zone that makes the whole property feel unmanageable. A proper garage deep clean and organization project is a significant half-day or full-day task that pays enormous dividends in both function and home value presentation.
Step 1: Empty Everything Out
Clear the garage completely — everything onto the driveway. This is the only way to clean effectively and make genuinely informed decisions about what stays, what goes, and what gets properly stored. Sort everything into four groups: keep (active use), donate/sell, garbage, and seasonal storage (items that will go back in but are only used part of the year).
Step 2: Clean the Empty Garage
- Ceiling and walls: Knock down cobwebs, wipe any oily marks from walls near where vehicles park
- Concrete floor: Sweep thoroughly, then apply a concrete degreaser to oil stains (from vehicles) — let it penetrate 15 minutes and scrub. For a thorough floor clean, rent a pressure washer and wash the floor pushing water toward the floor drain or garage door opening
- Windows and door tracks: Wipe any windows, clean the garage door track of debris and old lubricant
Step 3: Organized Return
Return only what belongs — vehicle space first, then wall storage for active tools and equipment, then overhead storage (ceiling shelving or hoists) for seasonal items. Vertical wall storage (pegboards, wall-mounted racks) dramatically increases usable garage space relative to the floor footprint. Label all bins and storage containers — a labeled, organized garage stays organized.
