Keeping Litter Box Areas Clean
The litter box area is the most challenging odour management zone in an Ontario cat household. Consistent routine is more effective than any single product — a daily 5-minute routine prevents the ammonia buildup that causes persistent odour.
Daily Routine
- Scoop clumps and solid waste once or twice daily — more frequent scooping reduces odour more effectively than any litter additive
- Sweep or vacuum the area immediately surrounding the box (tracking is inevitable — a litter mat reduces it but doesn't eliminate it)
Weekly
- Top up litter to maintain adequate depth (3–4 inches for clumping litter)
- Wipe the exterior of the box
- Vacuum or sweep the surrounding floor area thoroughly
Monthly: Full Box Wash
- Empty the entire box
- Wash with hot water and mild dish soap — avoid bleach (the ammonia in cat urine can react with bleach to produce chloramine gas)
- Dry completely before refilling with fresh litter
- Wipe down the wall and floor surrounding the box (urine splash and litter tracking accumulate here)
Odour Control Products
Baking soda sprinkled under the litter layer absorbs odour effectively without affecting cat behaviour. Enzyme-based cleaners (rather than bleach or ammonia-based products) are the most effective for cleaning cat urine accidents on floors near the box. Ventilation is the most underrated odour tool — ensure the litter area has airflow.
