Removing Pet Hair from Every Surface
Ontario households with dogs and cats face a continuous pet hair management challenge — particularly during the heavy shed seasons (spring and fall, when most breeds blow their undercoats). Effective pet hair management requires the right tools for each surface type and a consistent routine.
Hard Floors
Standard vacuum cleaners on hardwood and tile often blow pet hair around rather than collecting it. A rubber broom — the rubber bristles create static that lifts and collects pet hair rather than scattering it — is significantly more effective than a traditional broom for pre-vacuum hair collection. Vacuum after sweeping or rubber-brooming. Electrostatic dry mops (like Swiffer) are also effective for hard floor pet hair between vacuums.
Carpet and Upholstery
A HEPA-filtered vacuum with a motorized brush roll attachment is the most effective tool for embedded carpet pet hair. For upholstery: rubber gloves dragged across the surface create static that lifts hair effectively (more so than a lint roller, which is better for light surface hair). A rubber squeegee is also effective on upholstery — the same principle as rubber brooms on hard floors.
Clothing
A high-quality lint roller is the most practical clothing solution for light fur. For heavier pet hair embedded in wool or fleece: slightly damp rubber gloves dragged in one direction lift embedded hair before using the lint roller. Washing pet-hair-covered clothing with a dry sheet in the dryer before washing loosens much of the hair into the lint trap.
What Professionals Do Differently
Professional cleaning for pet households typically includes: high-powered HEPA vacuum on all floors and upholstery, rubber brush attachment for carpeted stairs, and the extension of the cleaning scope to include more under-furniture vacuuming (where pet hair accumulates in significant quantities in Ontario homes with shedding pets). For heavy pet households, inform your cleaning company upfront — it affects time allocation and tool selection.
