First Week Move-In Cleaning Checklist
Moving into a new Ontario home — whether buying or renting — presents a rare opportunity to clean before everything is in place. The window between possession and unpacking is the most efficient time to address certain tasks that become much harder once furniture is positioned and boxes are everywhere.
Before You Unpack (Day 1)
These tasks are easiest before any furniture or boxes are in the rooms:
- Clean all kitchen cabinets and drawers inside before putting anything in them
- Wipe the inside of the fridge if it came with the place
- Clean all bathroom surfaces (toilet, sink, tub/shower) before your toiletries go in
- Wipe all window sills and tracks
- Clean light switch covers and outlet covers (remove grime from previous occupants)
- Floors throughout — sweep/vacuum and mop before furniture goes down
First Week Priorities
- HVAC filter: replace immediately — you don't know when it was last changed, and moving stirs significant dust
- Run the dishwasher empty on a hot cycle with a cleaning tablet
- Run the washing machine on hot with a cleaning tablet
- Check under the sinks for any moisture or previous leaks
- Clean behind the toilet (accessible now before a cabinet goes there)
Can Be Done After Unpacking
- Walls (spot clean marks from previous occupants)
- Ceiling fans — easier to see once you're living in the space
- Garage and basement — after you know what's going where
Professional Move-In Clean
Many Ontario buyers and renters book a professional move-in clean before possession — this is the most efficient approach, as professionals can complete the entire home in a few hours before your moving truck arrives. Book at maidless.ca/ontario.
