Cleaning for a New Baby
Welcoming a new baby changes the cleaning priorities of an Ontario home significantly — both in what needs to be cleaner, and in what products are appropriate. Newborns spend the majority of their time close to floor level and have developing immune systems that benefit from a clean environment without the exposure to harsh chemical cleaners.
Product Safety
Most commercial cleaning products are formulated for adult environments and are safe when used as directed with proper ventilation. For rooms where a newborn spends significant time — the nursery, living room floors, change areas — the priority is ensuring products are fully rinsed and surfaces are aired before the baby is in contact with them. Specific products to be cautious about in baby environments: spray bleach (persistent residue on surfaces), heavily fragranced products (volatile organic compounds), and aerosol air fresheners (direct inhalation concern). Simple alternatives like diluted vinegar for glass and hard surfaces, and fragrance-free dish soap for washable items, work well in baby spaces.
Floor Priority
Babies spend more time on floors than any other household member — tummy time, crawling, and play all happen at floor level. Floors in a baby household need more frequent cleaning than the standard adult home. Hard floors should be mopped with a gentle, fragrance-free cleaner weekly. Carpet should be vacuumed with a HEPA vacuum daily or every other day — carpet holds significantly more allergens and particle contamination at floor level than hard flooring.
Professional Cleaning with a Newborn
Many Ontario families start professional cleaning immediately before or after a baby arrives — the combination of increased cleaning demand and reduced available time makes this one of the highest-value professional cleaning moments. Bi-weekly or weekly professional cleaning with fragrance-free products (specify at booking) is the standard service request for new-parent households. Ontario HST (13%) applies.
