Deep Cleaning Your Oven
Oven cleaning is the task most consistently included in professional deep cleaning and move-out cleaning in Ontario — and the task most homeowners avoid because it's genuinely difficult and time-consuming. Here's the complete approach.
Self-Clean Function: Should You Use It?
Most Ontario homes have ovens with a self-cleaning function — a 2–4 hour high-heat cycle (900°F/480°C) that burns food residue to ash. Opinions are divided on whether to use it:
- Arguments for: Effective on light to moderate buildup, requires minimal effort
- Arguments against: Extreme heat can trigger smoke detectors, produces significant smoke, has been linked to thermal element failures in older ovens, and is not effective on heavy grease buildup where the grease has carbonized
- The professional position: For regular maintenance, the self-clean is fine. For heavy carbon buildup, manual cleaning with a commercial oven cleaner is more effective and safer for the oven
Manual Deep Cleaning
- Remove oven racks and soak in warm soapy water in the bathtub — 30–60 minutes loosens baked-on grease
- Apply commercial oven cleaner (Easy-Off or equivalent) to all interior surfaces including the door interior — follow product instructions for contact time (typically 20–30 minutes cold-oven, or a shorter time on a warm oven)
- Wipe out with paper towels — the cleaner dissolves the grease into a soap that wipes away
- Wipe with a damp cloth to remove all product residue, then with a dry cloth
- Clean and reinstall oven racks
