Removing Pet Urine and Odour from Carpets
Pet urine on carpet is one of the most persistent cleaning challenges in Ontario pet-owner households. Standard cleaners mask the odour temporarily — but the urea and bacteria in urine require enzymatic breakdown to actually eliminate the smell. And crucially, what doesn't work can make the problem worse.
Why Standard Cleaners Don't Work
Most household cleaners clean the visible surface of the carpet but don't penetrate to the carpet backing and subfloor where urine has soaked. Steam cleaners can actually set urine odour by bonding the protein to the carpet fibres with heat. Vinegar and baking soda absorb and mask — they don't break down urine components.
What Works: Enzyme Cleaners
Enzyme-based pet urine cleaners (brands: Nature's Miracle, Rocco and Roxie, Angry Orange) contain biological enzymes that break down the uric acid crystals that cause persistent odour. These are the only products that actually eliminate pet urine smell rather than masking it.
For Fresh Urine
- Blot (don't rub) as much urine as possible with paper towels — apply pressure to draw liquid out of the carpet
- Apply enzyme cleaner generously — it must reach the same depth the urine reached, including through the carpet backing
- Cover with a damp towel and leave for 10–15 minutes
- Blot dry. Do not rinse with water immediately — the enzymes need time to work
- Allow to dry completely before covering with furniture
For Set Stains and Odour
Old set stains require soaking — apply enzyme cleaner, cover with plastic wrap (to prevent evaporation), and leave for several hours or overnight. Multiple applications may be needed for deeply set contamination. A black light in a darkened room reveals urine deposits that aren't visible in normal light.
When to Call a Professional
For extensive contamination (multiple incidents, years of buildup, urine that has reached the subfloor), professional carpet cleaning with hot water extraction and enzyme treatment, or carpet replacement, is the appropriate response. Book at maidless.ca/ontario.
