Cleaning to Prevent Ants & Pests
Ontario homeowners deal with several common household pests that are directly affected by cleanliness practices — primarily ants (pavement ants and carpenter ants are the two most common species), cockroaches (in multi-unit buildings particularly), mice (especially in homes near ravines or green space), and silverfish (in high-humidity areas). Cleaning practices can't eliminate pest issues on their own, but they dramatically reduce the conditions that attract pests and help expose problems early.
Kitchen: The Primary Target
- No exposed food: All dry goods sealed in containers, fruit not left out overnight, pet food not left in bowls between feeding times
- Grease cleanup: Cooking grease residue on ranges and backsplashes is one of the primary ant attractants — regular degreasing of the cook surface and range area is essential in ant-prone homes
- Under-appliance cleaning: The space under and behind the refrigerator and stove accumulates food debris that ants and cockroaches access from below — pull these appliances out and clean beneath them quarterly
- Sealed compost and garbage: Indoor compost bins with loose lids are among the top pest attractants in Ontario kitchens — tight-sealing containers emptied daily eliminate this food source
Moisture Control
Pests need water — eliminating standing moisture (under-sink leaks, condensation around cold pipes, basement puddles) removes a key resource for ants, cockroaches, and silverfish. Check under sinks monthly for moisture accumulation and address any drip sources immediately.
Perimeter Cleaning
Cleaning debris and vegetation away from the home's foundation — leaves, wood piles, soil-contact wood trim — removes the harbourage that carpenter ants use as entry staging. A clear, dry perimeter significantly reduces carpenter ant pressure in Ontario homes near trees.
