Professional Cleaning Products vs. DIY — What's the Difference?
Ontario homeowners sometimes wonder whether professional cleaning companies produce better results because of their products or because of their experience and method. The answer: usually both, but the product question is more nuanced than the marketing of both professional-grade products and consumer brands suggests.
What Professional Products Offer
Concentration: Professional cleaning products are typically highly concentrated and diluted on-site to specific ratios for different applications. A professional glass cleaner might be diluted 1:50 — meaning a litre of product produces 50 litres of solution. Consumer products are usually pre-diluted (you're paying for water) and often more expensive per diluted litre than professional concentrates.
Specialized formulations: Professional-grade degreasers for kitchen cleaning, descalers for calcium and limescale, and enzymatic cleaners for organic staining (pet urine, for example) are more specialized and more effective than most consumer multi-purpose products. The one-product-does-everything proposition of most consumer cleaning aisle products represents a genuine compromise.
Where Method Matters More Than Product
For many cleaning tasks — bathroom surfaces, floors, counters — proper method (dwell time, scrubbing technique, rinsing) delivers more of the result than product quality. A professional cleaner using consumer products with good technique often outperforms a DIY attempt with professional products but poor method.
The Fragrance Factor
Many consumer cleaning products are fragrance-heavy — the "clean smell" is a marketing feature. Fragrance has nothing to do with cleaning efficacy, and some Ontario clients with sensitivities find strong fragrance counterproductive. Ask your professional cleaner about fragrance-free options if this matters.
